ECU Poll: Turnout the Key to Victory in North Carolina

Trump leads Biden by two points; Tillis and Cunningham are tied; Voter excitement high in both parties

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Turnout will determine if North Carolinians return Republican Thom Tillis to the U.S. Senate, or replace him with Democratic opponent Cal Cunningham, according to a new poll conducted by East Carolina University (ECU). Voter turnout will also determine if Donald Trump or Joe Biden wins North Carolina’s 15 Electoral votes, says Dr. Peter Francia, Director of the ECU Center for Survey Research.

Dr. Peter Francia

Francia explained, “Our poll results show that there are few undecided voters and few voters who are willing to change their mind, whether they are currently Biden or Trump supporters. This suggests that campaign efforts to persuade voters are unlikely to make a significant difference. Instead, the outcome of the Trump-Biden contest in North Carolina will hinge on which party – Democrats or Republicans – does a better job of turning out their supporters to vote. By extension, the results in the Trump-Biden election will almost certainly affect several of the highly competitive down-ballot races as well.”
