Green flag drops on NC State Senate race
LENOIR, N.C. — I love being the underdog; indeed, I embrace the role! Why? Because my life’s vocation has been fighting with and on behalf of the underdog. It is always a joy to see the underdog defeat the odds — and naysayers.
Now, as a Democratic candidate for the N.C. State Senate for Avery, Burke and Caldwell counties, I find myself in that underdog role. That doesn’t bother me. That motivates me!
Indulge me a moment as I resort to how I know best to explain myself — a NASCAR metaphor. Yesterday, as I was filing, I heard Darrell Waltrip in my head, hollering into the mic, “Boogity, boogity, boogity! Let’s go racin’!” In short, the green flag has dropped, and we’re ready. For two months we’ve been doing warm-up laps, making sure the driver, the crew and the car are ready for a marathon race, much like the 600-mile May race in Charlotte.
Like a single-owner start-up, we’re taking on the big money. That means we have to keep our foot on the gas, even through the corners.
That’s OK. I like to mix it up. Some door-to-door, fender-to-fender, bumper-to-bumper, rattling cages racin’ is how I live my life — as my young friend Abigail Taylor pointed out on social media recently.
So, if you too care for the poor and vulnerable, the working class, children, teachers, and all people held in contempt by the Republicans controlling the General Assembly (though I can’t believe for a moment all Republicans), join our team! We’re going to race hard and have fun.
And, I have every intention of winning. We may be starting at the back of the grid, but in time, we will work our way through the pack. Every pass will be made possible because we will demonstrate that the Democratic Party is a better deal for North Carolinians (thanks to the Burke County Democratic Party for the spot-on expression, “better deal”).
We will expand Medicaid.
We will treat our teachers with dignity through proper pay, proper per-pupil funding, and true control of their own classrooms.
We will protect the natural beauty that draws so many people to our state as new residents or tourists.
We will return North Carolina to its position as the most progressive state in the South.
We will do this with your help. But you can’t help from the stands. It’s time to rattle some cages. We need you on the team. If you’re interested in knowing more, visit our campaign website, BarrickForNC.com. If you can help with a financial contribution, you can do so here. However you help, know that I’m aiming for an Alan Kulwicki experience, when the late racer won the NASCAR title as the owner and driver of his car, named “Underbird” in its final race because of his underdog status. It was a win nobody saw coming.
