Passing of Danny Bowman is a Loss for Caldwell County

His old school and loving ways represented Caldwell County values

GRANITE FALLS – On Monday, our son lost one of his most important mentors and our family lost a dear friend.

Danny Bowman

Danny Ray Bowman

Danny Ray Bowman, 75, passed away at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was the grandfather of one of our son’s closest friends in school, Eric Benfield. Together, under the tough, common sense “old school ways” taught by Danny, Eric and Allyn were taught the value of working hard. They were also taught the value of loving harder.

In caring for his family and welcoming others into it as he did, Danny didn’t need to say much. Yes, he demonstrated through his actions that industry is an honorable value (Danny worked their tail ends off), but more importantly, he taught that service to others is the greatest gift one human can give to another.

Caldwell County has, indeed, lost a great and irreplaceable citizen. I don’t recall reading his name in the paper, but he – and folks like him – are truly the people that built our county. Yes, it is right to honor those whose names appear in the news because of political or community service. But Danny – and those like him – deserve to be honored, for it is hard working people that build a community.

Mr. Bowman was born Sept. 30, 1942, in Catawba County to the late Samuel Ray Bowman and Mary Elizabeth Leona Hawn Bowman. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Eddie Bowman.

Mr. Bowman was a member of Grace Chapel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sandra Sheets Bowman of the home; two daughters, Vickie Simmons of Granite Falls, and Dora Benfield of Hudson; one son, Bryan Bowman and wife, Melissa, of Granite Falls; three grandchildren, Eric Benfield, Max Simmons, Lexi Summerlin; two great-grandchildren, Hadley Benfield, and Cody Benfield.

Funeral services will be held at Grace United Methodist Church Thursday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m., with the Revs. David Nolan and Tom Deane officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive from 3 until 4 p.m., prior to the service at the church. Serving as pallbearers will be Bryan, Eric, Max, and Ronnie Bowman, Marty Curtis, Gene Sherrill. At the family’s request memorials may be made to the Backpack Ministries, Grace Chapel United Methodist Church, 4336 Grace Chapel Rd., Granite Falls, NC 28630. Bass-Smith Granite is serving the family of Mr. Bowman. Online condolences may be made here.
