A Poem on Kneeling

New Pledge

by Abigail Taylor

Sit, kneel, stand, lie flat
on your back. Let them all whine.
You’re American.

Prodigal children
Remember the brother who
felt more deserving.

Workers in the field,
Remember the master paid
all of you the same.

Kick, scream, dance, raise up
a middle finger. You’re free.
You’re American.
